Classic Cycling Routes
From high-altitude mountain passes to tropical island loops, these five routes offer some of the most memorable cycling experiences. Each entry includes distance, difficulty, best season, and what makes it special.
Qinghai Lake Circuit
Distance: 360 km | Difficulty: Moderate | Best Season: July – August
A stunning loop around China's largest saltwater lake, set against the dramatic Qinghai-Tibet Plateau at an average altitude of 3,200 m. The road is mostly flat with gentle rolling sections, making it accessible to motivated beginners. Highlights include vast golden油菜花 fields, nomadic yak herds, and the deep blue lake stretching to the horizon. Most riders complete it in 3–4 days, staying in small guesthouses along the route.
Sichuan-Tibet Highway (Southern Route)
Distance: 2,140 km | Difficulty: Expert | Best Season: May – October
One of the most challenging and rewarding cycling journeys in the world. Starting in Chengdu (500 m) and ending in Lhasa (3,650 m), the route crosses 14 mountain passes above 4,000 m, including the 5,018 m Chola Mountain. This is not a trip for beginners — altitude sickness, extreme weather, and long stretches between towns demand thorough preparation. The reward: jaw-dropping Himalayan scenery, Tibetan Buddhist monasteries, and deep cultural immersion. Allow 25–35 days.
Hainan East Coast
Distance: 420 km | Difficulty: Easy | Best Season: November – March
An excellent choice for beginners and a popular winter escape. The eastern coastal road from Haikou to Sanya is well-paved and mostly flat, with coconut groves, sandy beaches, and fishing villages lining the route. The tropical climate means you can ride in shorts year-round. Average daily distances of 70–80 km make it a relaxed 5–6 day tour. The seafood and fresh coconut water along the way are unbeatable.
Erhai Lake Loop
Distance: 120 km | Difficulty: Easy | Best Season: March – May, September – November
A perfect weekend ride around Erhai Lake in Dali, Yunnan. The full loop takes 1–2 days on well-maintained roads with dedicated bike lanes in many sections. The landscape shifts between ancient Bai villages, marble quarries, and tranquil lakeside views framed by the Cangshan Mountains. Stop at Xizhou for its traditional architecture and at Shuanglang for a sunset break. Ideal for riders of all fitness levels.
Thousand Island Lake (Qiandao Lake)
Distance: 150 km | Difficulty: Moderate | Best Season: April – June, September – October
Located in Zhejiang province, this man-made lake is surrounded by rolling hills and lush forest. The 150 km loop features frequent elevation changes with steady climbs and descents that reward riders with panoramic viewpoints over the emerald-green water dotted with countless islands. The road surface is excellent and traffic is light outside of Chinese public holidays. A popular 2-day route with a mid-point stop in Jiangjia Town. The spring azaleas and autumn foliage are spectacular.
